한 (Han) is a deep and complex emotion that is deeply rooted in the culture of Korea. It is a collective feeling of sorrow, grief, resentment, and anger that many Koreans feel in response to years of injustice, oppression, and suffering. The Han is described as a feeling of longing for a better life, of suppressed anger, and of a sense of powerlessness in the face of injustice. It is an emotion that has been part of the Korean identity for centuries, through numerous foreign occupations and division. As a proud Korean myself, I wanted to write a piece inspired by my culture. I took this feeling and channeled it into a solo Double Bass piece, leaving traditional Korean motifs and elements in a piece for a Western instrument.

My first double bass concerto, Warrior of the Night, brings forth a fresh take on the soloistic capabilites of the double bass. It combines dark romantic melodies with moving virtuostic passages. The first movement, Crisis, captures the anomalies that bring us troubles and uncertainty. Tonal passages fighting through a chromatic structure reflect the struggle. The second movement, An Angel's Nocturne, paints a starry canopy above the area in which we can express ourselves. This is found through the emotive melodies backed by the shimmering accompaniment. The Finale, Flight, releases it all, flowing in freedom beneath the clear sky. It is an electrifying and vibrant finale that allows the musician to showcase their greatest skills. Warrior of the Night is a piece that will be enjoyed by performers and audiences alike.
